Tottenham and Liverpool ‘eyeing each other’ over recent £20m Premier League signing

Tottenham and Liverpool could battle it out for one of the Premier League’s best midfielders in the summer transfer window…

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have earmarked Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha for a potential summer swoop. The Premier League giants are interested in signing Palhinha following his seamless transition to English football this season.

Fulham beat Wolves to the 27-year-old’s signature in the summer, paying Sporting Lisbon £20m to add him to Marco Silva’s newly-promoted side.

That fee will now be seen as sensational value for money at Craven Cottage after helping Fulham enjoy an impressive return to the top flight.

Palhinha’s consistent displays at the heart of the Cottagers’ midfield have helped them to seventh place after 18 games, closer to the Champions League places (seven points) than the relegation zone (13).

And according to transfer expert Dean Jones, he has surprisingly attracted the attention of two of the league’s biggest outfits.

Jones told GiveMeSport: “His consistency is almost unrivaled across the league for players in this position and Liverpool and Tottenham are understood to be two of the clubs watching him at the moment.

“Fulham know they have an absolute gem in the 27-year-old Portugal international and they absolutely do not want to lose him.”

Fulham will be under no pressure to sell at the end of his first campaign, given he is under contract in west London until 2027.

Liverpool or Tottenham will have to make an offer the club can’t refuse, especially if they retain their Premier League status after their strong start to regaining promotion.

In that case, Fulham will be in line for a healthy profit from the fee they paid to lure Palhinha from Portugal.

Liverpool and Tottenham are believed to want to improve their midfield options in 2023.

The Reds are one of the favorites to sign Jude Bellingham after missing out on Aurelien Tchouameni last year and have also been linked with Enzo Fernandez of Benfica and Moises Caicedo of Brighton and Hove Albion.

Antonio Conte wants more midfield signings at Tottenham and is said toooooooo be eyeing Barcelona’s Franck Kessie and Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister among others.

Palhinha has apparently joined others on both clubs’ transfer wishlists, however, and could be the subject of major approaches this summer.
