Red Devils sail into Europa League quarter-finals

Marcus Rashford fired Manchester United to victory at Real Betis with a rocket of a strike as Erik ten Hag’s side cruised through to the Europa League quarter-finals.

The Red Devils headed to Spain all-but assured of progress from this last-16 tie having won the first leg 4-1 in freezing conditions at Old Trafford last Thursday.

Betis made United sweat during the opening stages in the return fixture, but Rashford’s outstanding strike silenced the bouncing Estadio Benito Villamarin and secured a 1-0 win on the night.

The impressive 5-1 aggregate triumph puts them through to the quarter-finals, with Friday’s draw to outline their potential path to the Europa League final in Budapest.

The second leg in Seville had started in unconvincing fashion against Manuel Pellegrini’s Verdiblancos, with Juanmi wasting a glorious chance before Joaquin struck the post from distance.

Facundo Pellistri, making his first United start, hit the post at the end of a poor first half that was followed by a much-improved second-period performance by Ten Hag’s team.

Rashford looked sharp and followed an inexplicable miss moments earlier by unleashing a stunning 25-yard strike that ensured United’s first away trip since their Anfield annihilation ended in a win.

Betis’ 50,000-plus fans were always here in hope rather than expectation given their three-goal deficit and their side flew out of the blocks, wasting a glorious eighth-minute chance.

United were caught out of position and Ayoze Perez sent Juanmi through, only to drag his shot across the face of goal with Harry Maguire breathing down his neck.

It was a huge let-off followed by 41-year-old Joaquin winding back the years to unleash a stunning 30-yard effort that hit the post after a slight Casemiro deflection.

Betis were making life uncomfortable for a strong-looking United side, although Ten Hag’s men eventually managed to slow the tempo and frustrate the hosts without ever looking in control.

The sharp start had waned but David De Gea had to be alert to stop Juanmi, who had raced between the visitors’ centre-back pairing to meet a fine through ball.

Maguire blocked the lively forward’s next attempt as the raucous home support continued to back their team, whose faint hopes were almost extinguished in stoppage time.

Casemiro went down on the left following a foul by Joaquin and Bruno Fernandes swung in the resulting free-kick, with the ball falling to Pellistri to get a shot into the ground that hit the post.

Wout Weghorst threw himself at it in an attempt to prod home but could not stretch to meet it, just as he had failed when trying to reach a Casemiro header at the start of the game.

The sides traded wayward efforts when the second half got under way, with Rashford among those to miss as he played with the bit between his teeth.

Betis goalkeeper Rui Silva denied the 25-year-old after Fernandes played onto him, with the forward furious with himself after uncharacteristically blazing over a brilliant chance.

Rashford quickly let that frustration out in stunning fashion.

Having been found by a sweeping Casemiro pass, he took a couple of touches and then let rip with a fizzing 25-yard strike that flew home to silence the Betis faithful in the 55th minute.

De Gea had produced a fine reaction save to deny Perez from a corner shortly before a brilliant goal that ended hope of an always improbable Betis comeback.

Maguire headed off target as United looked for a second in Seville, with substitutes Jadon Sancho and Marcel Sabitzer both having attempts.

Fernandes, walking a suspension tightrope with Casemiro, was withdrawn and Weghorst had an attempt saved as United exerted the kind of control Ten Hag craved from the start.

More changes took the sting out of a tie that ended with United’s travelling fans calling for the Glazer family to sell the club.

Thursday marks a landmark day in the Manchester United sale process as representatives of Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani will visit the club’s facilities and Old Trafford.

The Qatari banker is believed to be the front runner to take over control of the club from the Glazer family, who put the Red Devils up for sale last November. This news comes as a blow to fellow would-be owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who also submitted a bid ahead of February’s initial deadline.

There remains some uncertainty about whether the Glazers will sanction a full sale of United or pursue external investment, with a deadline for revised offers fast approaching.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire revealed his desire for “more starts” after helping the Red Devils past Real Betis – and Paul Scholes has now had his say.

Erik ten Hag’s side booked their place in the last-eight with relatively little difficulty, with Marcus Rashford scoring a winning goal on the night to secure a 5-1 aggregate victory. Maguire was named at the heart of the Red Devils’ defence for what was just his second start in Europe this season.

The former Leicester star has lost his place in the Red Devils’ side this season following the arrival of Lisandro Martinez. Following the full-time whistle against Betis, Maguire admitted that he wanted to regain a starting berth in the side but also suggested that he was aware of the role he currently plays.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s French club, Nice, have reached their first European quarter-final since 1960.

France’s only remaining side in European competition eased past Sheriff Tiraspol with a 3-1 victory, having won the first leg 1-0 away from home last week.

Sheikh Jassim will make an improved bid for Manchester United next week in a move that could leave rival ridder Sir Jim Ratcliffe trailing in his wake.

Representatives of the billionaire Qatari Sheikh visited Old Trafford on Thursday and held what were believed to be broadly positive 10 hour talks with club officials.

The talks included detailed financial discussions over the club, as well as a tour of the Old Trafford stadium and lunch at the club’s Carrington training ground.

The Sheikh, who is chairman of the Qatar Islamic Bank, was not present himself for the discussions, but they did involve the president of his Nine Two Foundation Shahzad Shahbaz and the his personal advisor Fady Bakhos.

Representatives for Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani held detailed financial discussions with Manchester United officials at Old Trafford today, according to the Times.

They were then given a tour of Carrington, where they had lunch.

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani’s representatives spent 10 hours at Manchester United today and held meetings which were described as positive, BBC Sport report.

The Qatari banker remains comitted to buying the club.

Marcus Rashford has surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo’s as Manchester United’s sixth highest goal scorer in European football.

The England international netted his 27th goal of the campaign with a wonderful long-range strike to give Erik ten Hag’s side the lead at Real Betis. Rashford, who had also given United the lead in the first leg at Old Trafford, has now moved up to 25 goals for the club on the European stage.

That moved Rashford above Ronaldo, who ended his relationship with United by mutual consent in November following a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan. The Portuguese star completed a stunning move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr in January and is expected to earn in the region of £173million per year.

Manchester United eased into the Europa League quarter-finals as Marcus Rashford’s 27th goal of the season secured a 1-0 second-leg win and 5-1 aggregate victory over Real Betis.

The Spaniards started the better of the two sides with a number of opportunities before Wout Weghorst missed a golden chance to notch his third Red Devils’ goal. Rashford then spurned two openings as United aimed to add to their aggregate advantage.

The academy graduate did eventually manage to get on the scoresheet as his powerful effort from range saw his side claim the lead and victory in Spain. United as a result progressed with eventual ease and will now look forward to Friday’s draw.

Once this second stage of the takeover process is over, the bidders have 10 days to get back to Raine Group – the US commercial bank who are overseeing the process.

Raine will then feed back to the Glazers, who will decide upon a preferred bidder.

If – and some people think it’s a big if – we get to that point, then the preferred bidder will be given a period of exclusivity in which to negotiate terms with the Glazers

A total of four parties want to buy Manchester United, according to the Telegraph.

Sources with knowledge of the club’s sale process say that there are two other parties – aside from Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe – interested in a full takeover.
