Rangers can land GvB upgrade in Hasenhuttl

Glasgow Rangers have sacked Giovanni van Bronckhorst in what was an almost inevitable move given the Ibrox side’s recent form.

The Dutchman had won only two of the club’s previous five Premiership matches and combined with the Light Blues’ woeful Champions League campaign, it made for a straightforward decision.

Ross Wilson will now need to act swiftly and appoint a manager who can hit the ground running while playing a good standard of football that can see the Glasgow side claw back the nine-point deficit in the title race.

Former Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, who worked with Wilson at the Premier League club, might be the ideal appointment for the club.

The 55-year-old is currently without a club following his sacking at the south coast side following a poor run of form, therefore he is ready and available to start straight away.

Nathan Jones, who succeeded the Austrian in the Saints dugout, praised his “aggressive” style and this would be a totally different approach from the one taken by Van Bronckhorst, who was so laid back to the point he was almost horizontal. A more aggressive approach is maybe something the players need to revive their season.

Jurgen Klopp also praised Hasenhuttl, dubbing him “exceptional” during his spell at Southampton, with his high pressing and energetic style leading to wins over the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur since the start of last season.

He also had success in Germany, leading Ingolstadt to the Second Division title while achieving Bundesliga finishes of second and sixth in charge of RB Leipzig. With experience in Germany and England, he should be more than able to adapt in Scotland and spark a revival in this stagnant Rangers team.

With the next domestic fixture not until 15 December, Wilson will surely want a new man in place by then and this will mean he needs to act swiftly. With Hasenhuttl a free agent, he could be a big upgrade on the stoic Van Bronckhorst.
