Rangers can ditch Morelos for McBurnie

With Glasgow Rangers’ season going from bad to worse, it’s difficult to choose just what has been the worst part so far.

The club are nine points adrift of Celtic in the hunt for the Premiership title, finished bottom of their Champions League group, and are currently missing nine first-team players due to injuries.

Despite the poor results and the faith in Giovanni van Bronckhorst dissipating with every passing match, it’s arguably been the form of Alfredo Morelos which has been the most disappointing aspect.

Granted he was returning from a long-term injury at the beginning of the campaign, but the 26-year-old has managed to score just three goals all season and has looked like a shadow of his former self.

With his contract expiring at the end of the season, Van Bronckhorst could well sell him in January, with his recent performances showing no sign of improvement.

Against St Mirren last week, Morelos lost possession 13 times, took just 35 touches, and played 17 passes, while looking sluggish throughout, and something has to give.

Striker Oliver McBurnie, who was first linked with the club back in the summer of 2021, has become a focus of attention due to the fact his contract also expires at the end of the season.

The £38.5k-per-week hitman – who is a well-known Rangers supporter – might not be the ideal Morelos replacement, however, he is in good form this season.

The Scot has scored nine goals in 17 Championship matches so far for Sheffield United, rebounding well after netting just once during the whole of 2021/2022.

Former Scotland striker Chris Iwelumo has stated that the six-foot-two frontman is “unplayable” at times and his form this season certainly suggests he is getting back to the level which saw Sheffield United splash out £20m to sign him.

How many signings did Rangers make in the last summer window?

His current contract situation has made the Light Blues take notice and perhaps Van Bronckhorst will eye up a move for the 26-year-old, either for a reduced fee in January if he does decide to move on, or a free transfer at the end of the season.

With each passing day, it looks more and more likely that Morelos might be on his way out of the club.
