Andre Ayew, captain of the Black Stars, says his priority is to assist the next generation to excel in the 2022 World Cup.
The Al Sadd attacking midfielder says he has learned a lot from experiencing two FIFA World Cup tournaments in 2010 and 2014, and he is eager to assist the country’s rising talents.
Andre Ayew believes he is still healthy and strong enough to play at the peak level, and he considers it an honor to lead his country to qualification for the forthcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup competition in Qatar, after losing out on the tournament in Russia in 2018.
“I’ve grown up and played alongside different generations, over two World Cups. I’ve learned a lot from them, and I still feel fit and strong enough to play at this level. I had the honour of leading my country to qualification,” he told FIFA Plus.
“It was a great experience, but the focus now has to be on helping the youngsters and convincing them that we can progress, for ourselves as a team as well as for the country. I enjoy every moment,”
Andre Ayew landed in Qatar yesterday with the playing body and technical team. The players were spotted wearing traditional smocks called fugu. Ghanaians expressed their excitement on social media after seeing the players in traditional attire.
Before flying to Doha, Qatar the Black Stars of Ghana beat Switzerland 2-0 in an international friendly game. Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu and Bristol City attacker Antoine Semenyo scored for Ghana.
The Black Stars of Ghana is in Group H alongside Uruguay, Portugal, and South Korea. Ghana will play Portugal on 24th November at the Stadium 974, South Korea on 28th November at the Education City Stadium, and play their final group game against Uruguay on 2nd December at the Al Janoub Stadium.
The Black Stars will train at the world-class Aspire Academy during their stay in Qatar.
