Guardiola will not waste ‘one second’ thinking about the Treble

Pep Guardiola is not thinking about the prospect of winning three trophies this season

Pep Guardiola has told Manchester City players not to waste time thinking about the prospect of winning the Treble this season.

Defending champions England beat second-tier Bristol City 3-0 on Tuesday, thanks to a Phil Foden brace and a Kevin De Bruyne goal, to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.

City are level with RB Leipzig at 1-1 after their Champions League last 16 first leg and trail Arsenal – who have a game in hand – by two points in the Premier League.

Guardiola has experience of winning European and domestic trebles during his time with Barcelona but he is not considering that now.

Asked about the possibility of lifting three trophies this season, he said: “No, forget it. Forget it.

“When you start talking about that you start getting out of the competition and out of the competition. We’re not ready. We’re not going to waste time thinking about that. We are only thinking about [the next game against] Newcastle.

“The only thing I’ve said many times – I’m so annoyed to say it again and again and again and again after what happened in the last few years – we’re still two, three months away from finishing the season, we’re still in three competitions. “

City have won the Premier League in four of the last five seasons, and Guardiola says toppling Arsenal – while also containing rivals Manchester United – remains his team’s top priority.

He added: “It’s the biggest honour. It’s the biggest title. The biggest.

“I know we can’t drop points in the Premier League because we have a team [Arsenal] and United above us coming from behind.

“And the Champions League, we’ll see what happens in two weeks. The important thing is that we are there, but of course, we will continue as long as possible.”
