Chelsea are set for a busy end to the season as Todd Boehly prepares to make some big changes to the squad.
Chelsea are working on a five-man squad for the summer transfer window, with Todd Boehly looking to bolster their midfield options while Jorginho is likely to leave as a free agent. The Blues have had a tough campaign since Graham Potter replaced Thomas Tuchel.
The German coach has been given a big transfer budget to improve the squad, with the likes of Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly joining. But Boehly sacked Tuchel just days after the transfer window closed with Potter joining as his replacement.
After a promising start, Potter has come under intense scrutiny, with Chelsea winning just one of their last eight league matches. Attention has now turned to the January transfer window, with Chelsea already one of the most active clubs on the market.
David Datro Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Andrey Santos have since joined João Félix as new signings at Stamford Bridge. Felix arrives on a short-term loan until the end of the season to help provide another option in the attacking areas.
But it’s in midfield where Chelsea may need a reset this summer. Both Jorginho and N’Golo Kante are out of contract at the end of the season, while Denis Zakaria is likely to return to Juventus following his loan spell.
According to the Telegraph, Chelsea are working to get Kante to sign a new contract and positive talks have been held with the Frenchman. However, the report adds that Londoners are losing confidence that Jorginho will sign a new contract.
The Italian has flirted with the prospect of a Serie A return in recent years and Chelsea reportedly believe he will leeeeeeeeeeeeeeave as a free agent this summer. Kante joins Mason Mount as two priorities for Chelsea in contract discussions in the coming months.
But they are also scouring the market for midfield options as a possible replacement for Jorginho. Five players are said to feature on Chelsea’s options list, including English duo Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham.
Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Alexis Mac Allister are the other three options Chelsea are eyeing and it is suggested they could try a move this month. Chelsea already failed to persuade Benfica to sell Fernandez in January, with the Portuguese side frustrated in negotiations with the Blues.
