Finding one or two potential solutions to the problem Toney is missing is the goal for Giles and Dykes before next month. But they may continue the club’s philosophy of signing the most talented youngsters.
In the long term, they assess the forwards and centre-backs as the main ones. They tried to sign Mykhailo Mudryk last summer. But now his price seems too high.
Toney has cooperated with the FA’s investigation and will continue to play for Brentford until further notice.
On Tuesday evening, an FA spokesman said: “Ivan Toney has been charged with misconduct in connection with an alleged breach of the FA’s betting rules.
“In addition to the previous allegations The Brentford striker is also alleged to have breached FA Rule E8 30 times between 14 March 2017 and 18 February 2019.
