Boxing: Canelo Alvarez’s pound-for-pound history: How many weight divisions has he fought?

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is currently considered the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, he’s won multiple championships in many different weight classes. But we all wonder which weight classes has Canelo fought throughout his illustrious career. To those who aren’t aware, Canelo has already fought in four different types of weight divisions. He started his boxing career at Welterweight when he was a youngster. Won several national titles in this division but eventually moved up to Middleweight.

Canelo’s Middleweight run

When Canelo moved up to 160lbs, Canelo immediately won the CMB Middleweight title after beating Luciano Leonel Cuello with a TKO. In this category, the Guadalajara born fighter faced against Kermit Cintron, Shane Mosley, Josesito Lopez, Austin Trout and got the first of the only two losses in his career against Floyd Mayweather. Canelo also fought at 155lbs against the likes of Alfredo Angulo, Erislandy Lara, James Kirkland, Miguel Angel Cotto, Amir Khan and Gennady Golovkin.

Canelo’s Super Middleweight run

Another weight class where Canelo outperformed all other contenders was at Super Middleweight. He first fought Callum Smith in 2020 for The Ring’s Super Middleweight title. In the same fight, he also won the vacant WBC title in the same class. After Smith, Alvarez fought Billy Joe Saunders in 2021 and won the WBO Super Middleweight title. Last but never least, Canelo defeated Caleb Plant for the IBF title in the same division. So currently, Canelo Alvarez is the IBF, WBA, WBC, WBO and The Ring Super Middleweight champion.

Canelo’s Light Heavyweight run

Where Canelo has stumbled a little bit is at Light Heavyweight, where he moved up straight out of Middleweight to beat Sergey Kovalev in 2019 for the WBO title in that division. Then the Mexican decided to slightly move down to Super Middleweight to become the lineal champion of the division. Once he cleaned house, he decided to move back up to fight Dmitry Bivol back in May, 2022. He wasn’t able to win the AMB title in the division, which also became the second loss of his career as a boxer. Four weight classes in one of the most impressive boxing careers ever. Canelo is in a class of his own.
